Get your 3-site ticket at the Jackson County Historical Society's 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum, 217 North Main, and enjoy the charming warmth of the home decorated with homemade wreaths, ornaments and ribbons reminiscent of the 1850s in their "Homespun Frontier Christmas" motif...a terrific place to get in the mood for a great holiday season. Then, visit the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, 313 W. Pacific("All That Glitters-A Victorian Christmas") and Vaile Mansion, 1500 N. Liberty ("A Victorian Crystal Fantasy"). ********* Saturday, December 1, 2007 4 p.m. A 19th Century Christmas at historic Mt. Gilead Church Clay County Historic Sites is pleased to present 19th Century Christmas on the Western Border, a musical presentation written by local musician Christie Kennard. The performance features the vocals of Kennard, and Bruce Burstert as well as the Christ Church choir from Lexington, Mo. Perry Beam will provide instrumental accompaniment. “Selections for the performance are reminiscent of a time when Missouri was the edge of the Western frontier,” said Elizabeth Gilliam Beckett, Historic Sites Manager for Clay County.
Mt. Gilead Church was organized in 1830 as a primitive Baptist church. The present brick structure dates to 1873. This site offers a picturesque view of late 19th century life through its period style architecture and furnishings and is located two miles west of Kearney at 15918 Plattsburg Road. This free event is open to the public. Enjoy light refreshments and join the Museum in welcoming the Fairy Princess home for the holidays. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Kansas City Museum Fairy Princess. Meet the Fairy Princess herself on one of three special December Saturdays. She welcomes all children to visit her in the Corinthian Hall Gold Room, the room best suited for a princess, where they can whisper their secret holiday wishes and receive a special gift. Then, make a craft and enjoy a treat at the Museum’s 1910 Soda Fountain. Photographs with the Fairy Princess may be purchased for $5. ********* NEW BOOK! 175th Anniversary Lone Jack Christian Church Crossing 3 Centuries of Ministry, 1832-2007 A new book about this congregation's history is available through the Lone Jack Civil War Museum for $4.50. The Church history could not be written without including the community's early history. The book gives a general overview of the Lone Jack community in the 1800s as well as church history. through Sunday, January 6, 2008 4,000 Santas: Selections from the Collection of Richard Seaboldt Kansas City collector Richard Seaboldt exhibits more than 500 collectibles just in time for the holidays! More than 500 Santas will be visiting the Kansas City Museum. Seaboldt, a Kansas Citian for nearly 50 years, will display some favorites from his expansive collection of Santa Claus toys and figurines, which range in scale from the miniature to the life-sized. Many of the pieces were designed and made in Kansas City, while others hail from across the country and around the world. 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday, and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. through Sunday, January 6, 2008 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free Photography Exhibit: “Visions of Valor: A Portrait Collection of Extraordinary Heroes” Research Center Gallery (lower level of complex), National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial. Dramatic black-and-white photographs from famed portrait photographer Nick Del Calzo give insight into the Medal of Honor and the patriotism, courage and honor of its recipients. “Visions of Valor” is the first and largest exhibit of its kind in American history to honor the commitment and character of recipients of the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest military award for valor under fire. This museum-quality exhibit of black-and-white photographs is intended to educate the public about the Medal of Honor and to perpetuate the patriotism, courage and honor of its recipients.
